activities: broadcasting diversity

The Broadcast programme seeks to contribute to enhancing democracy by advocating for a more open and transparent system of broadcast licensing, regulation, editorial independence and transformation of state into public service broadcasters, as well as enhancing media pluralism, diversity and ICTs in Southern Africa. The programme has been coordinating a vigorous campaign that led to the enactment of the IBA Act to regulate broadcasting in Zambia and ZNBC (Amendment) Act in December 2002 to transform ZNBC into a public service broadcaster as opposed to a state controlled broadcaster that meets the interests of Zambians from all sectors of society.

Another core function of the programme is to monitor developments, events and trends in broadcasting and telecommunications in Zambia through the provision and reporting of monthly broadcast and telecommunications updates to the MISA regional broadcasting programme in Namibia. It’s focus is on monitoring government changes in policy on broadcasting and telecommunications, broadcast independence, diversity and pluralism. The programme also monitors broadcast developments in the region and at the global level and advises about their implications on Zambia.

The programme also seeks to promote diversity, pluralism and sustainability of community radio stations through encouraging the development of more sustainable stations in Zambia and providing technical advise to communities seeking to establish community radio stations.
